Bringing the outside in - Oxted

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

Simple yet well appointed rear and side extensions serve to double living space and bring the outside in, transforming our clients' house in Oxted.

The Brief

Our clients needed more living space for when their children and grandchildren came to visit, allowing them to maintain a dedicated office space, while providing a media viewing area, separate to the sitting room, with access to the garden for better use of their outdoor space.

They also wanted to renovate and reconfigure their kitchen, removing the laundry appliances by way of creating a much longed-for utility room!

The Design Solution

Rear and side single storey extensions, effectively creating an “L shape” rear to the house to bring in the light and garden views from all directions and provide a large outdoor patio area, with access from the living room, making more use of the garden.

Rear extension doubled the living space while the side extension provided a utility room / boot room with access from both the kitchen and garden.

Sky lights and low, tall windows in the new living room served to bring in as much natural light as possible, bringing the outside in and giving a dual aspect, maximum view of the garden.

The clients also chose to knock through the wall between the newly reconfigured and renovated kitchen and formal dining room, and install sliding glass doors between the dining room and living room to allow the kitchen to be shut off from the living space when required without losing the sense of light and space.

The Results

The interior living space was doubled and opened out to create better flow and a more spacious and airy feel throughout the downstairs.

Creating a garden room feel to the new sitting area, with direct access to a large and more practical patio area, has given our clients maximum enjoyment of their interior and exterior living spaces all year round.

Client appraisal:

"We are loving the 'sun-room' extension, even though at this time of year it is not getting the use it will get when we can open the doors onto the patio and really enjoy the light and space. We have received many compliments about the new space and the best thing was in July, when the 3 grandchildren arrived from Australia, we were able to provide them with all the space they needed, and they loved it.

Working with Julie was a pleasure. Full of good ideas and very responsive. She was also good at liaising with the builder if there was ever a delay or issue. Would strongly recommend her to others looking to do similar projects."
